If your property is being required to connect to municipal sewer, or you are planning to move from septic to sewer, the process can feel confusing at first. Many homeowners hear the phrase “sewer conversion” and think it is only a simple pipe connection.
In reality, a septic-to-sewer conversion may involve several steps: reviewing the property, coordinating permits, marking utilities, pumping the septic tank, disconnecting the old septic system, installing the sewer connection, abandoning the septic tank, backfilling the work area, and completing inspections.
At DCH Plumbing, we help homeowners, builders, and property managers complete the property-side plumbing work required for sewer conversion projects in Southwest Florida.
What Is a Septic to Sewer Conversion?
A septic-to-sewer conversion is the process of disconnecting a home from its existing septic system and connecting it to a municipal sewer system.
This typically includes:
- Disconnecting the home from the septic system
- Installing the sewer connection from the home to the sewer service point
- Pumping and abandoning the septic tank according to applicable requirements
- Completing required inspections
- Backfilling the trench and septic area after the work is approved
Depending on the property, the project may also include water line work, irrigation coordination, grass restoration, or additional site work.

What Is Included in the Package?
The base sewer conversion package may include:
- PVC sanitary sewer piping
- PVC water piping, when included in the approved scope
- Underground utility marking before excavation
- Septic tank pump-out coordination by a licensed hauler
- Septic disconnection from the home
- Sewer connection installation
- Septic abandonment support per applicable requirements
- Dirt backfill for the trench and septic tank area
- Inspection coordination
- One-year workmanship and material warranty
Every property is different, so DCH Plumbing provides a written proposal outlining what is included before the work begins.
Our Sewer Conversion Process
1. Site Review and Estimate
The process starts with a property review. We review the septic tank location, sewer connection path, access conditions, potential irrigation conflicts, water line requirements, and any visible site challenges.
This step helps us prepare a clear scope and identify potential cost factors before excavation begins.
2. Permit and Utility Coordination
Before digging, the work area must be properly reviewed, and utilities should be marked. Depending on the location, the project may also require coordination with the city, county, health department, or utility.
This is one of the most important parts of the process because sewer conversion work must be completed in accordance with the applicable code, permit, and inspection requirements.
3. Septic Pump-Out and Disconnection
Before the septic tank can be abandoned, it must be pumped out. This is typically done by a licensed hauler.
Once the tank has been pumped, the home can be disconnected from the old septic system and prepared for connection to municipal sewer.
4. Sewer Connection Installation
This is the core plumbing stage of the job. DCH Plumbing installs the new sewer connection using approved materials and methods based on the property conditions and the written scope.
If water line work is included in the project, that portion is also completed in accordance with the approved proposal.
5. Inspection, Abandonment, and Backfill
After the sewer connection is installed, inspections may be required before the trench is fully closed. Once the work is approved, the septic tank is abandoned in accordance with applicable requirements, and the trench and tank area are backfilled with dirt.
Grass and Restoration Options
Sewer conversion work requires excavation, which may affect grass, sod, landscaping, irrigation, or sprinkler lines.
DCH Plumbing’s base package includes dirt backfill. Grass or sod replacement is not automatically included unless specifically stated in the written proposal.
Available grass/restoration options may include:
Standard Finish
Dirt backfill only. This is included in the base package.
Bahia Grass Patch
For typical disturbed areas, Bahia grass patching may be available as an add-on.
Custom Restoration
For larger areas, sod, landscaping, or more detailed restoration, pricing is quoted separately after a review of the property.
Why Request an On-Site Estimate?
An on-site estimate helps avoid misunderstandings. Sewer conversion pricing can change depending on:
- Distance from the home to the sewer tie-in point
- Depth and condition of the existing lines
- Septic tank location
- Access for excavation
- Soil and trenching conditions
- Irrigation and sprinkler systems
- Landscaping or trees in the work path
- Water line work
- Inspection requirements
- Grass or restoration preferences
A clear estimate allows you to understand the plumbing scope, expected process, exclusions, and final pricing before work begins.
